Albury Cultural Precinct

A new cultural space joining a museum, entertainment centre and art gallery with landscape

Project Overview

Project type: Landscape Architecture Master Plan

Albury City had a long-term vision to create a contemporary, vibrant and exciting inner-city space for a growing regional centre. I designed the master plan so that civic and historic buildings were unified around a landscape with a mixture of small intimate spaces and large event spaces.

My Role

  • Project landscape architect
  • Liaising with the different levels of local government, consulting with the community and stakeholders.

The Project

QEII Square in Albury is surrounded by a museum, entertainment centre, art gallery and historic church.  With so many civic landmarks, the square was a prime location to unify Albury’s culture. I worked with city officials and community stakeholders to incorporate existing elements into a master plan that would unify the city’s cultural assets and celebrate a contemporary regional centre.

The entire vision cost $1.8 million and construction works are to be implemented in stages over a 5-year period.

Master Plan Elements

I designed the master plan to incorporate already existing features, and to unify and activate the site by:

  • Utilising existing paving from the entertainment centre and continuing it through the rest of the precinct.
  • Relocating existing flagpoles and adding new flagpoles to accentuate the central avenue.
  • Planting avenue trees and providing seating and amenities to raise the prominence of the central avenue.
  • Providing spaces for outdoor art exhibitions.
  • Celebrating the heritage church.
  • Providing flexible space for the proposed Youth Centre.
  • Providing a mixture of event space and intimate space.
  • Providing more accessible amenities.
